Return of the Jedi is not my favorite Star Wars. I kinda hate the Ewoks, but they are fun to draw. And speeder bikes are one of my favorite Star Wars vehicles, and it is the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. So here's that Ewok on a speeder bike from Return of the Jedi. Happy Star Wars Day!

May 4 is Star Wars Day, only because of the terrible pun, "May The Fourth Be With You." It's a dumb joke, but I still love it. Every year I do a drawing for it; this year I did a few extra as part of an Instagram challenge.

A lot of fans hated Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but I loved it. I even loved when Luke milked the weird cow aliens, which are called Thala Sirens, FYI.

Star Wars at 40

Today is the 40th anniversary of the release of Star Wars. I actually don't remember the first time I saw that movie, or how many times I've seen it since, but I can pretty much recite it line for line. I think Empire Strikes Back is better than Star Wars, and Rogue One is probably a better movie, too. But the original will always have a special place in my heart.

Luke dreams of joining the Rebellion, or at least going to Tosche Station for some power converters.

Rebellions are built on hope.

Carrie Fisher. R.I.P.

Man, 2016 turned out pretty shitty, huh? Politically, we're headed into very dark times, of course. But it also seems like we've lost an unusual number of artists and celebrities this year. Prince, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, George Michael, Florence Henderson, Garry Shandling, Elie Wiesel, Gene Wilder, Edward Albee, cartoonist Darwyn Cooke, and many, many others.

Carrie Fisher's death really stings, because I'm a big Star Wars fan, and her death was so sudden and unexpected. Of course, I had a crush on her as a boy. Princess Leia was awesome not just because she was beautiful, but because she was strong and independent and sassy and acerbic. Star Wars has been rightly criticized for its paucity of female characters, but the one it did have was pretty kick-ass.

Inktober Week 5

The last few days of Inktober. I only missed one day out of the month!

This was a fun exercise, though not as life-changing as some claim it to be. I don't know that I learned that much new, though I maybe re-learned some old lessons. I think the best thing for me was that I was drawing very quickly, instead of my usual slow, laborious process. And for a lot of these, I started directly in pen, without pencil layout, so I had to commit to the line immediately, for better or for worse. Like that drawing above of my daughter, it was for worse. She's a lot cuter than that!

It's Star Wars Day! I'm sure someone out there has done a version of the famous Hildebrant poster for the original Star Wars using the new Episode VII characters, but I haven't seen it. So here's my version . . .

It's Star Wars Day, so here's a Star Wars drawing.

Like many people, I hated those Ewoks in Return of the Jedi. But thinking about a bunch of pre-industrial teddy bears overthrowing the Imperial Empire gave me this idea, which I thought was funny.

In case you're not a nerd and don't recognize the reference, it's an homage to this Frank Frazetta painting, "Conan The Destroyer."

Who Wars

For the fiftieth anniversary of Dr. Who. I came to Who pretty late, just before the end of David Tennant's run, but I've become a fan of the show. I remember occasionally seeing episodes of the Tom Baker Dr. Who on Public Television when I was a kid, but I didn't get it. This image was inspired by this story, about a spat between Dr. Who fans who showed up at a Star Wars convention. I used Amy Pond and Rory because I like them a lot better than the current companion.
